Hi everyone, I just grabbed this yesterday and sat in 3 hours of traffic for it!!! So worth it. This is the discharge for an 8th Illinois private. 3 years of service, bounty paid stamping. I can't make his last name out but it looks like it says Thomas A Caussey private of captain Benjamin F Monroe. Company I 8th Illinois infantry vet. He was a farmer and 6 foot 1 and a half!! No doubt a post war image of him, he sure doesn't look 24 there!!

Outstanding finds! It's very cool you were able to acquire an image of the soldier to go along with the document! How much do such documents usually sell for? I've seen a few discharge papers from other collectors, but I never looked into them much.
These discharge papers are very affordable for any level collector. I paid $95 for the discharge and the image. The price changes a little depending on the information on the papers. Something like a famous regiment or department or specialist rank makes it worth more at times

When he joined up with the 17th Illinois, he was Thomas A. Causey. That muster roll gives the same personal details but says he joined on April 10, 1862, for 3 years and was transferred to Company I of the 8th Illinois infantry.

Metamora is now a suburb of Peoria.

Interesting that he was mustered in at Pittsburg Landing, TN, 3 days after the Battle of Shiloh

I had a muster roll stolen after a house fire. The fireman knocked it off the wall and stepped on it and broke the glass. I went back in( after the fire) and got it. I gave it to the insurance agent for restoration and it never came back . The person who got it quit before I could get it back. Now no one knows what happened to it. The fire was so bad that I could stand in the basement and look through two floors and the attic and see the sky.

I'm quite new to civil war collecting, but so far I've been enjoying collecting miscellaneous confederate relics! I'm interested in belt buckles, bullets, and excavated weapons and canteens. I also picked up a really nice UCV pin at a garage sale for a great price, so if I can UCV items in the wild, I'll definitely try to pick them up.

Always wondered how much they could have gotten for it..

Just be very careful with confederate items especially. Get lots of reference books first. You're definitely in the right place, we have all of those things and more to share if you find the right people. Talk to our member @UCVRelics and grab a notebook to write down anything that will help you identify real relics. Welcome to relic collecting! Its addictive

I'm sorry that you experienced that but glad you're ok. The relics are replaceable but I can understand the frustration. I'm sure the agency could have tracked them down if they wanted too, boy that makes me mad.

As always, thank you very much for your help. I'm terrible at finding the information. It's interesting to see the spelling differ so like you say I'm guessing they took the information from a previous record and just wrote that down even though it was a misspelling.

It will show up just wait and see. I have waited a few years for items to resurface so I could buy them. So far the record stands at 3 years. What was the name on it? I bet someone might own it or look out for it in the future.

Thank you for the warm welcome haha! Coming from the Third Reich militaria field, I've run into my fair share of fakes, so I'll definitely be researching reputable dealers and finding reference books. I've heard good things about Steve Mullinax's "Confederate Belt Buckles and Plates", would that be a good book to pick up?

Absolutely! There's an extended edition you should search for. Collecting the confederacy by Shannon Pritchard is another great visual book. There are a good amount of confederate dealers that are trustworthy in my opinion but get ready to shell out some big money for top quality relics

I enjoy trying to find information on the Illinois people, especially those from the more northern part of the state. If you get any more relics concerning Illinois soldiers, the transcribed muster rolls for Illinois can be found on-line here through the Secretary of State's office.

By my last count, your soldier's family name has been spelled at least 3 ways. I'm still not convinced I know what it really is. Metamora is still a very small town. If he came back after the war, you'd think I could find something, once I got past all the Adlai Stevenson family stuff, that is.

I appreciate this so much, thank you for your time and research. I have other Illinois soldiers belongings I believe. I have letters that I haven't transcribed yet that I can share after I dig them out. I will definitely have to use that link to identify some more soldiers I have.
