WAs curious, anything in the historical record, journals, letters, conversations, etc that suggest Lincoln ever seriously considered coming to an arrangement w/ the South?

I will take a bet for no. Lincoln was a very knowledgeable attroney and knew that .a president lacked legal authority to allow Secession.

I think there were moments when he feared the possibility of military defeat, or loss of the will to fight among the people of the Union, might force the issue. That's the main reason he always insisted on not weakening the protection of Washington ... its fall might seriously damage public morale. But, he surely never considered "coming to an arrangement" with the rebels -- except on the basis of restoration of the Union..
