Hello,
Yes, that one exactly. I use an older program called Trainz 2004. (about 5.00 on ebay) There is a world editor in this program. I made a sea hex texture in it to make the board as needed for whichever battle our group is playing. I use 3d models of the various vessels . Using the yaquinto game rules. It is like using minatures, just less expensive and less space to store it all in.
Others I know use the same program for Napoleaonics, Armor, ect. The terain can be modified to reflect anything pretty much. Best of all, Gmax, (free) can be used to make more models to export into the game. Best of all, at Auran, there are thousands of models to downlaod directly into the program and build with.
Basicly, we use the program as a table top, or sand map.
whn I get home in 3 days Ill post a picute of it all.

I'll look forward to that. Does it run the calculations? My recollection is that in that game, like many other small-scale tactical games, every time you fire a gun it requires cross-referencing eleventy-four different tables -- that kills the appeal for me personally, but it's exactly the sort of thing a computer handles very well.

Hi
No, it does not calculate anything, just a display. The reason why is it would run afowl of the law if it did. Currently all rights to the game reside with the owner of Throughbred Minatures. He is a great guy and makes some amazing minatures. I would not want to slight him in this way.
Years ago there was a dos prompt system that did the calculations but it was pulled from free distribution for the same reasons. I understand too that the owner is working on making an app jsut for his too!. My fingers are still crossed in hopes that he will finish this up.
I just like this adhoc system as it can save, be emailed to others, and used as a play by email format too.

I'd wondered what happened to that DOS version. Makes sense.
