Can anyone tell me if this buckle is a fake or authentic? A man is his 80s at the time gave it to me back in the mid 1970s. It has been altered by soldering on the belt loop. I don't know what is under the loop I wasn't sure if I should try to pull it off to see or leave it. Most of theses I've seen has the three pins or prongs then holds it to the belt. thanks for any info you can give.
Thanks
Mike

I hope Ive posted this correctly I'm a new member. Thanks again
You're in the right place. You're right, originals had 3 prongs on the back. Looks like the prongs were there and have been removed to make a modern buckle out of it. I highly doubt the plate is original. No one in their right might would ruin an original like that. But then again stranger things have happened. @ucvrelics could tell you for sure if the plate itself is original. Here's an example of an original http://www.horsesoldier.com/products/relics/17708

Welcome From THE Heart Of Dixie. At first glance it looks like a repop but on looking further it may well be an original CSA Atlanta style plate that someone has converted in order to wear. If you could post a closer photo of the front it would help. What I'm look for is the stress marks on the front as when they poured these the prongs were standing up and then before it cooled down they would bend the prongs down causing the stress mark on the front as in the one below which is an original that I dug so I know it real.

I sent a close up pic to see if it helps. Thx for the info.

Looks like a repop as even though most were crudely cast this one is beyond crude. I don't see the stress marks and the periods are way to sloppy.

thank you for checking it out for me. I figured that but wanted an expert opinion.
