Welcome to the forum. There are several threads on General Stand Watie. I brought of two of them.

Remind me to look up a cew sources I have such has "Bitterly Divided the South's inner Civil War" David William's thenewpress.com.
Waite suffered quite a few defections from his ranks. There was one source I will have to look up that for most of the war he only had a few hundred troops.
Waite did partcipate alongside white Confederate troops in killing Indian civilians.

Stand Watie was probably one of the more interesting Confederate figures he was a Confederate Cherokee who was the last general in gray to surrender plus many of the Five Civilized Tribes sure hated the United States government (see The Indian Removal Act and Trail Of Tears) so they sided with the Confederate States going as far as to sign treaties with them.

I imagine if they were **** the slavs would not have the option of regaining their freedom. The north, OTOH, they did not have that opportunity.

There is material on Gen. Watie in this book. It is not a biography,but he was one of the principal Confederate commanders in the battle.

Major John Ridge was Murdered n 1839. It was a bloodletting affair. He was one of the leaders of the Treaty Party with Waite. Waite learned of the Plot and was able to survive. The Treaty Party and John Ross's group do a good job of murdering each other during the war, settling old scores.

Sorry I got to this thread kinda late. Read the book I posted above in December and didn't really know anything about the Gen. Watie before then.

They were 'selective racists'....
Racism itself was very much the norm through most of the 19th Century and well into the 20th Century in much of the world.

Native Americans fought for their interests. No different than the Negroes. No different than what the Whites thought they were fighting for.

The division in many tribes went back prewar. Pure blood/mixed blood and treaty/non treaty factions
