Greetings! I need help identifying this cartridge box. From stamped marking on inner flap looks to be CS. See also the eagle stamp on the inside of the outermost flap and the small anchor design on the lower buckle. Pictures attached. Thank you! Jonl51

Don't wish to be a downer, and by no means an expert, but I don't think that's original….

The "CS" appears modern-ish in font and especially placement, the pattern appears to be a standard US one, and the buckles look like they came off something else.

If I were a guessing man, I'd theorize this is an older privately-reenactor made box from way back.

At least that's my theory, would welcome being wrong.

Hi, you could be correct, I'm trying to do more research. Here are a few more pictures, the last one is a picture of authentic buckles on a CS cartridge box courtesy of Horsesoldier. They seem to be the same. Thank you.

Here is a better picture of the maker/arsenal stamp. There is lettering above and below the CS, but can't make it out. Thanks again!

Sorry not sure! Paging @UCVRelics USER=15401]@Package4[/USER]
This is a reproduction, the stitching, leather, pattern and thickness of the material are all off. Not even a very good reproduction and looks like it was made by someone who was trying to get the pattern correct for a short run.

The shoulder strap buckles are easy to obtain and there are quite a few outlets who reproduce them.

Hopefully you did not pay too much for the piece.

Thank you, no I didn't. Do you know what the eagle stamp is on the inside of the outer flap? Curious. Also that small anchor stamping on the one strap buckle? Appreciate it. Jonl51

The stamp looks familiar but I can not place it, I'll ask a friend who sells to the reenactment community and see if he knows. Keep in mind that the South's accouterments came from small harness shops for the most part and very few were stamped CS. When we see anything stamped CS 99.9% it is either fake or a reproduction for reenactment purposes.

Your box has way too many factors calling it into question, the leather and tanning are incorrect for a period piece, in addition to showing little age. The finial is a reproduction federal ball finial, though the strap buckles might be period. The anchor is simply a hallmark for the manufacturer. A fried of mine used to collect these buckles, which were also used in the harness world and resell to reproducers of ACW leather accouterments.

Thank you for your help, appreciate it. Perhaps a 1960's era repro with period buckles? It does not appear to be of recent vintage. I know and agree that CS marked objects are often suspicious although I have a CW book showing numerous southern cartridge boxes with Arsenal or maker markings including a CS. I was hoping someone might recognize the "CS maker " stamp and be able to shed more light on what it is. It will be interesting to hear what your friend knows about both the eagle stamp and the buckle. Thanks again. Jonl51

The stamped ink label is the quartermaster symbol. It may be the regimental quartermaster's old logo from their reproduction shop

I knew it looked familiar, that symbol came into existence in 1896 and I bet you are correct that this may be one of the Pakistani boxes that the Regimental Quartermaster (of Gettysburg) had made and subsequently stamped. I'll look at some of my very old receipts from Regimental and see if that was their old logo

Interesting, thank you. So a reproduction shop had a regimental quartermaster? Here is a bit better picture of the stamp after using the various contrast, sharpness, etc features on my cell camera. In reality the stamp is very faded. Also a picture of the bottom inside of the ammo pocket which is why I believe it is not of recent construction. Jonl51

Here is a picture of the U.S. Army Quartermaster symbol. Same as on my cartridge box, I believe. Thanks.
