Because of his connection with the Indians he was appointed by the Confederacy as a represrntative or commissioner to deal with the Five Civilized Tribes.He worked with Albert Pike and the two of them got the tribes to join the Confeceracy. On May 25, 1861 he was officially adopted into the Chickasaw tribe.
