Confederate carbines

Thanks for showing me this tecnic , didnt think it was possible. Can you tell between what time period they did this stamps? 18 or 1900 ?

Metal stamping wood has long been a thing. Quality inspection markings on gun stocks generally stamped. Like on this Smith Carbine.

As previously noted, the stamp of the name on the Smith Carbine you provided, appears to be that of a private individual marking his property. I wouldn't know how to date one of these stamps other than the letter font used.

The stamps were sold mail order... and you can still get them.

Finally i found a Smiths carbine that i could buy . I know they made around 30 000 but they were made in two diffrent factorys. Does anyone how many were made in Springfield? This one has a low SN 1563 and its in really nice condition , not mint but not far from it. Cant wait to try it in the shooting range. 😊

Actually three manufactures:
American Machine Works of Springfield, Massachusetts, Massachusetts
Arms Co., and American Arms Co., both of Chicopee, Massachusetts.

Approx. 30000 total

Its in really nice condition and dont think it has fired many shoots but there is one thing that bothers me. There seems to be a little play in the hinge, not much but like i said i bothers me. Where there a little play when they were new from factory ? The barrel looks almost new inside and outside so it makes me wonder.
