Co. Letter Changes. How? - 5th AL Regt Inf

The 5th AL CMSR of my ancestor notes he was originally in "Old Co. D" now "Co. C" This was within weeks of his enlistment and organization of the regiment.

Was there any specific pattern the army used for changing company letter designation? For example, if Co. B. was assigned elsewhere, did the rest of the companies simply move up one letter, i.e. C became B, D became C, etc.

Generally these company changes happened at a reorganization of the regiment. The changes in letters didn't necessarily follow any pattern - new letters were assigned as companies were folded into the new organization. This is not uncommon, especially with companies organized early in the War.
