There is a market for anything from the Springfield Armory. Originality and condition will determine the value.

Here are 3 pictures. Right now I am not interested in selling it, but am wondering what it might be worth.

Looks to be cleaned up. Whatever. Sell or not sell is your choice, but do include it in your home insurance policy for $2000.

Photos help a lot, thanks. Unfortunately, it appears to have been blued at some point, which is an incorrect finish. I'm not sure what is going on with that patch box, but it is also incorrect and appears to be modern. It looks much too large for the stock as it extends all of the way to the wrist, perhaps it is from a Mississippi rifle and has just been cleaned too much. The rear sling swivel appears to be held on by a rivet that also looks modern to me, it should have a screw instead. Value is really tough to call on something like this, but I wouldn't say over $500. Keep in mind, however, that I am a harsh grader.

Yes, that patch box is rather peculiar. Maybe that's where he kept his coffee -- his buddy had the grinder on his stock. :-)

It is a M1841 patch box, repop or original is almost impossible to tell from the photo. Nifty piece but I would be tempted to agree that $500 would be about right, that said if it's an original M1841 patch box... it could be partsed out likely for more than $500.

Now you really wouldn't want to part it out, would you? Unless ,of course, the gun itself is the sum of many parts.

In your opinion, who if anyone, is manufacturing the most faithful reproductions?

Of the M1861 series arms... no one. The best are customs made up of a mix of original and repro parts. Mr Haek & Lodgewood are the two I would point someone to that wants an M1861 that actually feels like an original. Anything Todd Watts touches is golden and finally there is Mr Zimmerman of Harpers Ferry... his work can be supeb but I would never purchase anything from him without first holding it.

Thanks a heap for your information. Your last line is classic. You are a true gentleman!

The original 1863 & 1864 Springfields came without a Mississippi Rifle patch box, or any patch box what so ever,-so, obviously your rifle had the patch box added sometime after the war.

Thank you guys for your information. I know very little about it but thought it had to be blued as there is not a mark on the barrel.
I know this is not a Civil War gun and have been told there isn't much demand for it as it's a gun used in the Indian wars. It's 1873 Springfield and looks good too me.
