Know what a saxhorn is? If not, take a look-see at this picture of a 10-man Union band, complete with drums.... and saxhorns! These valved brass instruments were popular on both sides during the war. The over-the-shoulder variety of the instrument (seen in the pic) was most often used, as the backward-pointing bell of the instrument allowed troops marching behind the band to hear the music.
