I've had in my possession for over 20 years an authentic Civil War booty item that deserves to be in the hands of someone more dedicated to all things Civil War than me. This is an 1859 book, tooled and leather bound, a gold edge copy of 'The Poetical Works of John Milton.' But what really makes this book special is the fact that is was captured from a plantation that was burned by soldiers from the Mississippi River Squadron at Pointe Coupee in Louisiana in 1864. The inscription inside gives enough information that has led me to research the time, place, reason for capture and the soldier who took the book. This includes information confirming the location of the plantation, with period copies of maps that show the plantations and their owners, as well as some genealogical research about the plantation owner of this book. It also includes historical information and copies of letters referencing the exact skirmish that lead to the burning of the plantation in question where the book was obtained, and the specific ironclad the soldier served on. And so much more research is possible. The book itself was published by D. Appleton & Co., 1859 in New York. All the research was done by internet and none of the letters or maps are originals but downloaded copies. This 159 year old book is in good condition having been protected over the years and obviously not read much, if at all. More information available upon request.
Something like this is hard to price, and I've had it on ebay for years at $4500.00 so its hard to sell, but I'm hoping for a reasonable offer, otherwise it stays in the family. Thanks for looking.
