civil war bayonet

Greetings to all,

I acquired a civil war bayonet with the later type III 8 rivet scabbard. The scabbard has no markings left if there was one. But the bayonet has markings which I have never seen before. Besides the US stamp there is a small C on the throat of the bayonet and a C and not sure could be an & symbol at the rear of the bayonet socket. Has any body got an idea which maker this might be. Is this an M1855/1863 bayonet or a later model that had just been put in a 8 rivet scabbard.

The C on the shank looks like a sub-inspector's mark to me, so it is of no help in identifying a manufacturer if that is what it is.

The other marking may possibly be the remains of a Collins and Co. marking. They were marked "C&Co." See the final paragraph of this article:

Thank you Rob, I visited the site you gave me. It was very informative. I believe it could have been the remains of
C&CO after reading the site and doing a bit more research on it. With this it does seam to place this bayonet to the Civil War era. The bayonet was in very bad shape when I got it. Without cleaning it up a bit nothing would have come to light.
