@JimW yes! I think you are correct. the Mle. 1766 (aka. lightened Mle. 1763) had just a friction fit on the rear band, while the musket of Kyle Kalasnik has barrel band springs. So that is a later feature... Mle. 1768 or Mle. 1773, yes?
The French supplied enormous numbers of older pattern muskets to the Continental Army, and of course, the French troops who were co-belligerents against Great Britain used primarily Mle. 1777s. It is thought that some earlier French muskets (Mle 1728/1746) may have been captured during the campaign into Quebec from militia stores there.
By 1800, with so many wars of the French Revolution, and the parlous decline of the French arsenal system inherited from de Gribeauval, a "corrected" Model 1777 came in vogue, the "Corrige de l'An IX" for year 9 of the French Revolutionary Calendar (the month of "Fructidor" An IX, to be more precise...). This corrected some of the flaws of the earlier 1777, changing the attachment of the front barrel band, etc. On paper the design was superb, but in execution, given the disorganization of the Jacobin/ Montagnard period before 1794, the metallurgy resulted in flawed parts, springs, etc. After Napoleon took over, tests determined that the failure rate was double that of the enemy's Tower "Brown Bess" muskets, that flints didn't really last much past 30 shots (a flint was usually issued with every 20 cartridges), and other defects. The quality of gunpowder used was bad too, so charges were often 185-grains, with about 15 grains used to prime the pan, and the 170 to launch the bullet. The tremendous fouling caused by the powder caused the balls issued for use in the musket to decrease in size... Finally to "20 to the pound" or .62 caliber, from a nominal .68/.69/ 17.5mm bore. The United States' Continental Army used a "19 to the pound" ball of .643 caliber, weighing about 8 tenths of an ounce. In the early U.S. Republic, after the implementation of the Springfield arsenal and armory in Massachusetts, and eventually Harpers Ferry, Virginia, the ball size was .65. The "Charleville" Mle. 1766 served as the basis for the Model 1795 U.S. musket, while the "corrected" An IX version of the 1777 was used to inform designs of the Model 1812. The Charleville (the 1777 was actually made in a host of arsenals during the Napoleonic Wars, including in the Netherlands, Turin Italy, Mabeuge, Tulle (source of many naval weapons), Charleville, St.-Etienne, etc. etc.) heritage is still evident in the U.S. Model 1816 or "standard" that saw use, essentially, from 1817 through the Mexican War 1846-1848, even if it was supplanted by the 1835/1840. Like the French Mle. 1822 bis, a number were converted to percussion.
