Yankee soldiers sit on top of a captured gun from the Petersburg fortifications - April, 1865

The tube on the piece appears to be a 3" Ordnance Rifle which would be black iron and not brass or bronze, however that said; it is still a fine picture.

That's still a nice colorized image. I like it well enough. A good job of coloring was done. People make mistakes. I actually recall a digest type of magazine from the early 60's with this image on the cover colorized. I wish I still had the digest it was full of Civil War images.

I would agree on the gun, however whoever colorized it may not be an artillery expert like we are . The carriage looks good - that's quite an improvement over the ones that look like oiled wood.

Who are these troops that they are wearing boots? Are they cavalry? Do artilleryman wear boots?

I also noticed that the 2nd soldier from the Right standing in front of limber has his pants rolled into a cuff. Also one sitting on the limber. I thought that was odd.

Also, the one sitting facing AFT has a blanket roll or something draped and tied over his shoulder. The colorized image painted a checkered pattern but it wasn't very clear. But the B&W image clearly shows this. It is too small to be a blanket roll and none of the other soldiers have one. What is that exactly?

One more Q:
The "driver" wears a different hat and the coat is totally different then the other men. His jacket has buttons on the cuffs and what appears to be buttons on the collar. Who is he? Would he be a soldier or a contract mule skinner??
