Cap Box?

It would appear to be, and welcome to the group from middle Alabama.

Welcome From THE Heart Of Dixie. Just from the photos the straps aren't riveted and the finial is suspect but I will call on the leather guru, @Package4

The more I look at the images, the more I wonder if it is in fact original. We need someone much more of an expert than I on leather items. I look forward to what a real expert has to say.

Welcome from Central Ohio. I am no expert and "know" enough to be dangerous, to be honest this piece has me a little stumped. It appears to have some crazing to the leather which is normal for a 150+ year old leather piece. I believe the lack of rivets on the straps would indicate an early piece but as @ucvrelics stated the finial looks suspect. Some of the thread also appears to be too white and lacks the normal discoloration. There are too many questions for me to say one way or the other. I will be interested to see what others think.

It would appear as if the box is a real shield front cap box with a replaced finial. Keep in mind that many early reenactors used original surplus gear and repaired as necessary (1960s)
