Good morning everyone!

I'm new to the site but I wanted to see if anyone had any knowledge about Jacob reed buttons pre "sons". I found this detecting in my backyard and the only information I found determine is this should be right around civil war era. Any help would be great. Thanks for checking it out

Note: other button judging by the eyelet is colonial if you would like to see more of that I can share

I hope so from what I've read they are uncommon but internet searches are annoying and too questionable

Thanks a lot guys I'm digging *no pun intended* how these forums work over the inconsistencies of mass social media.

Jacob reed started his business in the 1820's and it lasted until the start of the war then was taken over by his sons post war. The eagle style is a pre civil war style eagle that happens to be an artillery button. I do not have my book readily available while at work but someone else should be able to fill in the gaps.

Well that is good info! So I found the button in the back yard of a row of 1920 built homes in boyertown Pennsylvania about 2 hours east of Gettysburg and an hour from from Philadelphia. Boyertown had an old iron mine and foundry work in it that I assume attracted vets but it's struck me as an odd location for it

Look into this book for more info. Many times dies are reused by other companies so you just can't go by face alone. The back mark is the key. The buttons marked and son are all post war.

That is exactly why I was hoping to find more. And sons seems to be too common and with the back of this one not including his kids I figured it was a good find.

Welcome from THE Heart Of Dixie. All J Reed buttons are post Civil War made. They did not produce any military buttons for the yankee army.
