This recipe for Buttermilk Cake is from "Hood's Practical Cook's Book". It was published in 1897 in Lowell, Massachusetts. It is a simple cake to make. For the frosting blackberry jam is suggested.

"Buttermilk Cake"
This is the easiest cake in the world to make and is almost always successful. Melt one cup of butter, stir in three cups of sugar, six well beaten eggs, three cups of sifted flour, and one cup of buttermilk."
Bake cake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes.

For frosting 3 tablespoons butter, 1/4 cup blackberry jam and powdered sugar. Beat jam and butter together, Add powdered sugar enough until frosting thickens.
 
This cook book was published by the C.I. Hood Co. They were one of largest manufacturers of patient medicine. They were know for Hood's Sarsaparilla. They made many cook books, calendars and all kinds of advertising. The sarsaparilla was said to be good for your blood.
