This guy was Butlers aide and after Col (genl) Strong, Puffer took his place and stuck with Ben for sometime.
The guy was blessed with a real swirly penmenship

Although not a member of his staff, I was recently reminded of a connection between Butler and Brig. Gen. Adelbert Ames, postwar governor of Mississippi and butler's son-in-law.

Ames seems something of a Tragic Figure - though not as tragic as he would've been had he not been away when the James's and Youngers came calling! - especially during the final days of his tenure as Mississippi governor. It's a wonder he didn't get assassinated there - as I recall, he had to send his family away for their safety.

Mississippi was a rough and tumble place after the war
