Burnside carbine

My only carbine, bought at a estate sale, the family had it for years well before WW2 , said to have been bought in Kilbourn City, WI. Serial number for those who have data sheets 11629, I think it is a 3rd model, what do I need to check in order to fire it, I see reproduction cartridges that I can load up easily. I am not sure how this seals in the gases or if I should fire it, I really want to. The carbine is matching. Thank You GR

Nice gun! No match on the serial number though. Here are the 2 closest, but you can't really read anything into it:

11592 - - 052065 - CO C 2ND TEXAS VOL CAV -
11718 - - 091563 - CO C 12TH NY VOL CAV -

It's kind of funny, I have checked dozens of serial numbers at this point and the closest anybody ever came to a match was me! Mine is only 1 number off from a match within a range of guns issued to the 6th Indiana.

Rob63 thank you for the info, was it issued out in 1863 or 1864 ? Can you tell me what parts are supposed to be numbered.

I think it is just the receiver and breech block that are numbered. Given that it didn't match any records there is no way of knowing when it was issued for sure, but presumably in 1863.

Hi, George. That's a very nice piece. I notice that even the screw slots are in very good condition, which is something you don't always see on firearms this old. I think it's a nice find!
