I do not have any useful photos , yet. When I do I'll post. This carbine is SN 9708. The stock is marked, on one side, H./ H./ P and then in small letters ugh. I am assuming that this could be H. H. Pugh. On the other side near the breech is 1864 and what may be an ix vi which I am assuming ae Roman numerals but I do not understand the reference if that is the case. I have found three H. Pughs in Federal service. The only HH Pugh was in the 7th Ill. His problem is the Park Service data base has him being discharged for disability in 1862; but his gravestone and paperwork has him being discharged in 1865. The other problem is that Todd's American Equipage does not list the 7th with a Burnside. Another lot of gentlemen are Hugh F Pugh (3) of the 6th NY, 13th NY and 3rd W. Va. cavalries. Last we have a group of Henry Pughs in the 8th Pa., the 18th Pa, and the 21st Pa. cavalries. So I am hoping that even a range of numbers could prove helpful. So anyone with a copy of SRS I would appreciate it if, in your spare time, you could check and see. I'll take any clues. When I get the right light and get the dog out of the picture I'll post the carvings on the stock and the SN 9708. Thank you H

Looking forward to seeing photos. Its not listed in the SRS. It also does not list the 7th in or around that range.

My gg grandfather was also in the 7th Illinois, and from my research on that unit they were issued Sharps in general, but a few company's also had Smith carbines.

appreciate that ucvrelics. Booner your info on the weapons of the 7th conform with Todd's information. I was hoping they had Burnsides because of their ties to the Grierson raid. Oh well! I guess I'll be trying to track down rosters and and returns. I promise to post photos but I am not doing well with my phone. Thanks again H

Could it be this guy: Harvey Harrison Pugh?

He was in the 15th & 17th Indiana Infantry... started out in the XXI Corp and went to the IV Corp? I seem to recall a decoding of stock markings I did that turned out to be written backwards maybe the same thing is happening here? Like they used a mirror or something? The 17th were briefly mounted & given Spencers... perhaps the Burnside was a substitute, or else the 15th had Burnsides? Or maybe the markings are post war and he just bought a gun that was "just like" the one he had in the war?

From your writing to God's eyes! The 15th had Springfield rifles in 63-63. So this warrants further investigation. If the 15th went home maybe that would be the reason for Mr. Pugh to transfer to the 17th. I would loath to have been given a Burnside instead of a spencer; but then the army does like to do those things. This was a great tip. Even if it doesn't play out it gives me something to do. thnx so much. H

From what I understand the 15th mustered our, but those veterans who reenlisted became part of the 17th... who I guess could have gotten a hold of some Burnsides along with Spencers? Anyhow I'm glad to help! Stock markings fascinate me.

I know that this Pugh was in company B of the 17th. Since I live just north of Cincinnati I will be making a trip to the Indiana Historical Society which is in Nap town. They do hold some sources on the 17th. While its a long shot I am hoping to find some reference to Burnsides. My only thinking being that the new guys got what was left. Anyway that will probably have to wait for Spring. Again many thanks for putting me on this trail. H
