It is of the pattern and style of the noted Bullseye type of CW canteen. However it would take close examination to determine if it is indeed period, or a reproduction of same.

Look on the pewter neck to see if there are any markings ( to my knowledge repros don't have them ); one of my smooth-sides has the maker's name stamped on it in tiny letters.

Earlier issues typically didn't always have the makers name on the spout. It became a mandate to do so later in the war. Actually have seen a couple folks with repros now that are including a makers name stamp on the spout to be a bit more authentic.

Anything else that would distiguish a CW from a repro?

This is a second canteen at the same auction. I would imagine if one is real, it might help a little that the second is as well. Same seller.

As I have learned the hard way (and subsequent research, lots of it) it should be taken to a reputable dealer for appraisal. Sometimes, you must leave it with them for thorough evaluation. It "looks" authentic, but so many scam artists out there can age a piece, add lettering to convince you, etc.--I don't wish to dampen your enthusiasm, just be very careful...

Left is my original Bulls-eye Canteen, with my reproduction of the same on the right. Like James N. said, my original has markings showing it's from the contractor J. HALL ROHRMAN PHILAD.
A great book on the subject of US canteens is: http://www.amazon.com/U-S-Army-Militia-Canteens-1775-1910/dp/0967073170/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1426782586&sr=8-1&keywords=U.S. Army and militia canteens

Without your help I would have taken years to figure out that inscription. Thanks again. I have it and, all things considered, I think it is in great shape. I even have the canvas, complete.

Inscription:

J. HALL ROHRMAN PHILAD.

Tx Again,

Spec

PS If you want more pics let me know....

Hi

How do you store your canteen? Do you put it in zip lock and keep in on the cool side (50-65F) ?

One last observation: " Some dispicacble scoundral stole the cork off my lunch" quote from WC FIELDS.

No, nothing scientific in my handling of the canteen. I just keep it in a glass door cabinet that I keep my small amount of relics in for display, in my central air climate controlled house.
