I am Planning on selling my 1861 colt special rifle. Where can I find boxes tall enough to ship a musket. Also can anyone recomend any websites that I can list this items or bussiness where I could consgn it

Lodgewood is where I would suggest consignment simply because Dave is so honest. When I ship a musket I break it down and put all screws in a ziplock bag, all bands in another, then the lock in a small box then wrap everything in bubble wrap and hard foam. That allows a smaller box. I take a complete inventory and include a packing list inside the box. I take pics of the complete musket (extra pics of any mars or dents), broken down and packed as well as the UPS label with tracking number with signature required. Then make sure it's insured for twice the replacement value. If the UPS store asks whats inside I give the model "Special Model M1861 parts," "Parker Hale P58 parts" etc. I then send pics and all info to the recipient so they know what to expect and approx when.

It's also worth asking the consigner how they ship and possibly use the same carrier. If it's on a regular route the drivers often know the people and actually take better care of things.

I'm not a fan of UPS but they haven't screwed me personally yet. My wife spits when she sees one of their vans though because their next day air is a mere suggestion. But they're better than Fedex and have better tracking than USPS. Over the years I've received via Fedex, UPS, USPS and Speedee. I've had the least problems w/ UPS. There is a reason I insure for twice the value though. All of that said UPS has gotten worse over the last couple years IMO.

Good luck.

If you have access to a table saw, it would be rather simple to make a shipping container out of thicker plywood.
