Gents, I grabbed these the other day as I don't have one on my powder horn. Am I correct in assuming the hammered metal one may be CW era and the claw (bear?) and horn one of earlier vintage?

Not Civil War and beside they are way to big for a measure of powder.

I don't know about that. I haves little bit of experience in this area. There about the right size for a large cal. or bore gun prior to the civil war. The traders 0and Indians would have had 3-6 if them in a belt or sling. They are supposed to hold 1 powder load.

I believe you may be confusing a powder measure with a powder container. The Native Americans didn't carry premeasured charges on their belt like a Dutch Musketeer. If they had a measure at all, that's all it was, a device to measure a powder charge. You have shown a number of powder measures, not powder charge containers. As for the age of them.....anywhere from this morning back to 150 years ago. These powder measures are being produced and aged today in numbers that would stagger your imagination.

Oh, ok. Sorry. Like I said I have a little bit of experience in this field.
