I have a iron pin and iron spike, naval items I think. Anyway, they are in bad shape and disintegrating. Any one know how to coat these or something to help hold them together?

The first thing is getting all of the rust removed as they will rust from the inside out. I would recommend electrolysis to remove the rust. Then boil them in wax for a few hours to remove any remaining moisture.

I have treated them with a light coating of oil after sanding on them lightly. But the more I handle them the more they seem to degrade and crack. Could it be they are just solid converted rust?

No there is metal below the rust. If you don't stop it they will turn into a pile of rust.

This is just because i have worked with many different materials...don't seal it until all the rust has been removed. Otherwise your sealing the rust in, then it's only a matter of time until you would have a pile dust of what used to be a spike.

You all are awesome. Thanks for taking the time to help. I am researching the electrolysis process, I guess you're never to old to learn.
