One small addendum. The term "flying artillery" was used during the War with Mexico following the 1838 decision by the War Department (Poinsett) to adopt a system of more mobile field artillery. The result was that four companies of the 3rd US were to be "mounted" and under the auspices of Major Ringgold these became called "flying artillery" because of their new mobility. in fact, however, only one company - Ringgold's own Co. C - appears to have been true "horse artillery" in that every man was mounted. The other three (including Bragg's Co. E before he took over Ringgold's after the latter was MW at Palo Alto) were "mounted" in the sense that most field artillery batteries were in the Civil War.There is an interesting dispute between John Tidball and William Birkhimer after the War over whether Tidball's Battery A 2nd US (later John Calef's at Gettysburg on July 1) became the Army's first true horse artillery in 1861 or,, instead, Ringgold's Co. C was the first. Birkhimer served in the 3rd in the post-War years and Tidball's confidante and sponsor, William F. Barry, had served briefly in Ringgold's Co. C when it was started in 1838. Tidball's claim was that Co. C was only true "horse artillery" occasionally. From everything I've seen in primary sources I'd go with Ringgold's Co. C but it's highly plausible that Tidball got his information from Barry. That's speculation on my part, however.
