Bed Roll and Knapsack

It's one of those soldier looks that seems so unique the first time you see it, then you start seeing it everywhere once you're sensitized to it! That's probably the most famous photo of Confederate soldiers taken during the entire war, if not the most famous photo of Civil War soldiers in general. And the one right in front is wearing a backpack, with a horsecollar bedroll over it. I've worn this combination at times. It's mildly more comfortable than rolling the blanket on top of the pack, especially if your pack isn't very full. There aren't very many photos of soldiers actually wearing their gear under IRL, field conditions, but you see this combo enough that I call it common.

Yes, aren't there several possibles as to who are the prisoners? I remember reading a lot of the conjecture years ago- haven't checked into it lately. It does seem very possible these could be ID'd!

Anyone know a current status, please? It's ok to post the image, talk about public access! May wish to get it from LoC or National Archives- I hear there's a ' thing ' where it's possible to claim YOU scanned or otherwise made one of these old treasures ' yours ' , and some of those cases win when making claims of infringement ( isn't that ridiculous? ) so please be careful.

Both knapsacks and bedrolls in this photo of late war Confederate prisoners.

I'm a tad skeptical but maybe we already know...

I suspect that captured soldiers took the opportunity to equip themselves with as much gear as possible, much of it probably picked up off the battlefield. Anything to make themselves more comfortable in their new situation.

I think a lot of famous images have various claimants. You know the famous ' kiss ' image, Time's Square, a sailor kissing a nurse on VE day? Several ID's on that one too- and I've always felt it understandable. Guessing there was quite a bit of kissing that day, you could see where each claimant would feel it really was theirs. That's a good link, thank you!

@lelliott19 , these conversations always make me think of your thread, ID on the fallen soldier in yet another famous photo. If it's possible to ID a man killed at Gettysburg, among so many casualties IMO it's possible to get this one right.
