I just received an answer back from Tim, he thinks it is an American made bayonet with characteristics of both English (reinforcing rim around the rear socket) and French (the blade). He says that many bayonets of this period were stamped; he also says without examining it in person his best guess is American. He is going to forward the pictures to a couple of bayonet experts and see what they think. Stay tuned.I really wish I knew what the inscription said. Doesn't seem to match any names of makers I have seen on various bayonets photos online from that time.
