Baked Caramel Pudding

"Scald one quart milk, brown one-half cup Larkin Sugar in spider. Add milk to sugar and place on back of stove until sugar melts in the milk. Add two cups bread-crumbs, two beaten eggs, two-thirds cup sugar, one teaspoon Larkin Vanilla, one-fourth teaspoon Larkin Salt. Pour into buttered dish. Bake one hour in slow oven."

Mrs. Charles P. Loring, Auburn, Maine.
"Larkin Housewives' Cook Book", 1915.

The Larkin Co. operated a booming mail order business that sold soap, packaged foods and other household products to millions of American housewives. Their cookbook is filled with prize-winning recipes submitted by Larkin customers to the company's recipe contests.

The Larkin Co. was started by John D. Larkin as a soap factory in Buffalo, N.Y in 1875. At that time it marketed two products: Sweet Home Soap, a yellow laundry soap and Crème Oatmeal, a toilet soap. Larkin would go from soap to many products, including, perfumes, spices, coffee, peanut butter, paints, furniture, and china.

Just found information on the "Larkin Housewares Cookbook" published by the Larkin Co. in 1915. This cookbook has the prize winning recipes submitted by Larkin customers from the company's recipe contest. This one was from D.L. Nuzum of Watson, W. Va.

The recipe from Larkin's Cook Book is Beef Broth with Vegetables.

"Cook a beef bone with a little meat on it several hours in two quarts of water. When done, add one can of Larkin Tomatoes, three onions finely chopped, one pint chopped cabbage, one cup chopped potatoes, two tablespoons of Larkin Rice or Macaroni. Salt and pepper to season. Serve with oyster crackers. The vegetables are quickly chopped if put through Larkin Food Chopper."

From the Henry Ford Recipes' Archives. This one is at:

Baked caramel pudding.

I've had baked caramel bread pudding, but not just plain pudding. This looks like flan.
