Authentic Photo?

The website for the 13th North Carolina reenactors states:

"The 2nd national Flag of the 13th NC was captured at The Battle of the Wilderness, May 6, 1864. Cpl Grief Mason was rifle butted to death while grasping the flag by Sgt Stephen Rought of the 141st Pa. This was the 1st flag captured for Gen US Grant in the Overland Campaign."

Hey ya'll I was thinking about whether or not it'd be a good idea to admit this because my account name is my online alias but I thought I'd come out from the shadows and say that the subscriber is me.

I don't have any particular interest in North Carolina images and such but I do have a keen interest in all who were involved in the conflict.

Yes the photo is authentic. But I'll have to track down its source again.

Here's the source for Philip A. Nail.

Any source for the photo of Grief Mason? Now I'm hooked... Thanks in advance.

Of all the unusual first names I've seen from the 1700-1800s, naming your son Grief is the one that gives me the most pause.
I saw in our huge family Bible from 1874 that my ggg grandfather's first name was Scar. Other sources named him Scare. That's closer to his Italian name Schertorio. So glad they didn't actually name him Scar or Scare.
