This was found last week at the site of a small skirmish, also the original house was used as a hospital for the larger battle nearby. I will be trying out reverse electrolysis next week to see if I can get most of the rust of.

If you want peace, prepare for war.

Welcome, Sivis! Hope this shortened version of your name is acceptable. If you would prefer something else, please say so. What is the material that the silver item is in and around?
Is there any detail as to markings on the flat end of the silver item?
I read an interesting article yesterday about different uses of aluminum foil, which included rust removal, etc. Can't wait to find out what it is!

The shortened version is fine, no worries. I believe it's actually the old style hammered brass rivet. No markings on it that I can see with the eye or my microscope, other than small abrasions. However under the micro there is clearly a thin piece of metal, that was obviously broken off and rusted, that it was holding. I was hoping it was a piece of thin leather but it is not. I'm assuming it's iron, to me it feels just a bit too heavy to be steel.
