Small axe/hatchet

Found this at cavalry area. It's pretty crude wrap around solid piece I believe. Very pitted and used/abused. I'm in process of getting the rust off. I'm thinking about putting a handle on it. Any idea on age? I'm thinking definitely pre 1900 but I could be wrong

That's definitely late 19th century. Virtually impossible to say whether it's a military item or not, but a fun find. I don't think I'd try to haft it, not with that great big split in the poll.

Square Poll Axe or Hatchet could even be 18th century. What are the measurements?

Hand forged, locally made. One could even be whipped up quickly with the farrier's forge.

George Neumann has a few examples with that measurement but calls it a Square Poll Hatchet. The Square Poll Axes are of larger measurements.
