I have 2 more photos I turned up in my docs, which were just identified at some point on a website somewhere as ' Riverboats ', sigh. Before I put them away again, if they've been here before or if anyone has them- any ideas? Yes, I realize 'not' " riverboats", I mean does anyone know the names, please? Sorry to continually ask on these- makes me a little crazy to have all these unidentified and misidentified photos in here.

I can't give you names at the moment, but in the first photo the largest vessel appears to be a sidewheel ferryboat, possibly one that was converted into a gunboat (I'd say probably except that I can't actually see any sign she's armed), with what looks like a dismasted schooner and a barge on the one side and a tugboat on the other. (The schooner could possibly be a powder hulk-- floating storage for gunpowder.)

The second one looks like a line of double-ender gunboats... looks like perhaps four, with a fifth vessel (the third from the camera) being a converted ferryboat. Both photos are very likely up the James River in 1864-5, the first probably being near City Point.

Ah. I knew one looked extremely familiar, thank you! That's the trouble with having two files of documents- one is nicely ordered, slowly looking as if an anal retentive forensic team had glued it together, the other looks like a Jr. High kid with ADD, whose been smoking something, tried to throw together a semester project the morning it was due. My personal function level is the former, with organization, so am easily kefluffled. Only thing for it is to ask here, one by one, hope to be able to assign another photo to the anal forensic file.

Thanks for reminding me on the Hudson, btw. I have a grandson by that name- have a little project going where I collect historic items ' Hudson ' related, kind of force them on poor Mom. She's far too polite to decline, some day Hudson will 'get it'.

I noticed something different about these pictures? In picture # 2, on the bank it looks like a tarp covering or roof top of a tent or cave where people, (soldiers, men, women)? Are living. Also, caves maybe being also used for cover. You can also see a foot path. :bounce:

Hope no one was a sleep walker.
