The Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant: The Complete Annotated Edition edited by Marszalek, Nolen, and Gallo was published in 2017 and is 784 pages.
The Annotated Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant edited by Elizabeth Samet was published in 2019 and is 1,068 pages.
For reference, the 1999 Modern Library Paperback Edition of Grant's Memoirs (unannotated) is 702 pages.
Presumably the difference is what the editors chose to comment on and how much. While the editors of the 2017 would seem to be more knowledgeable about Grant, the page counts indicate the 2019 has much more extensive annotations. My local public library system has at least one copy of both versions.
One comment I found online made it sound like Samet's commentary is at least in part of a critique of the Grant historiography.
Has anyone actually read both?
