Following on from our trip over the pond to last years CWT Chickamauga tour we managed to fit in a visit to Andersonville National Historic Site.
After seeing @bdtex https://civilwartalk.com/threads/andersonville-national-historic-site.155341/ I was reminded to post these pics, not too many I might add as I don't want to duplicate too many of Bobbys excellent pics.
Entrance to the Visitor center and Museum.
Camp Sumter military prison, commonly known as Andersonville was intended to hold 10,000 men, the 16 acre pen had a 15 foot-high stockade wall and 2 gates. Nineteen feet inside the stockade was the "deadline", marked by a simple post and rail fence. Guards stationed in sentry boxes shot anyone who crossed this line.
Providence Spring.
Providence Spring in the foreground with the monuments in the distance.
View from Star Fort over looking the prison pen.
Andersonville National Cemetery.
One thing I found strange was when I was told at the visitor center to go to section I and locate the only Confederate grave at Andersonville.
The only headstone with a pointed top and to bear the Southern Cross of Honor.
I later found this link , http://blog.southerngraves.net/2014/05/only-confederate-soldier-buried-at.html
