While looking up a number in the SRS database I came across a unit, 1st ALA VOL CAV. Where was this outfit from?

It was raised in Montgomery in Nov 1861

Was this a Union outfit? They were issued some Smith carbines.

This was a yankee unit raised in North Alabama the SRS does not show CS weapons issued.

There was a Confederate 1st Alabama Volunteer Cavalry that was raised at Montgomery

The key here was SRS and CS weapons aren't listed in the SRS @Jobe Holiday is correct with USV

IIRC the SRS also shows 1860 Colt Armies being issued to the 1st Alabama Cavalry.

There are quite a large block of serial numbers of Mass. Arms Smith Carbines and Colt 1860 Army Revolvers listed to have been with the 1st Alabama Cavalry USV that have been pulled out of the Archival Records. The catch is that they are in private hands and difficult to access. And then by single number only because those who hold the numbers will not disclose the numbers they have documented. Yes, they also charge a fee to look up a number for you, and much more if your number is shown in their records and documented for you. If your Smith or Colt happens to be one of those captured by the 2nd Alabama Cavalry CSA at Vincent's Cross Roads, then the sky is the limit!
