Looking to represent my Great Uncle (A "few" times over) who was a 2LT in Co D, 10th Ala Cav. What would his dress and field uniform been? Would he of just carried a revolver and sword or would he of carried a carbine as well?
Here Major John B. Rudolph of the 10th Alabama Cavalry wears a regulation CS Army uniform coat, which like many wartime coats seems to lack the regulation branch of service colored collar and cuffs... And at right a surviving example.
A second lieutenant's uniform coat would have a single bar on the collar...

As noted above, he carried a revolver on his belt, besides the derringer in his jacket pocket.
Officers also generally had swords. But in the Confederate cavalry, like Forrest's, it was customary to strap them to the saddle when had.
