There is more than one story floating around about the origin of the root beer float. This one attributes the invention to Robert Green, a Philadelphian who replaced sweet cream with ice cream in soda water in the 1870s. You can still get one Philly style at The Franklin Fountain. The soda fountain is named for Ben Franklin whose printing shop was located on the same street.

The Franklin Fountain makes its own root beer syrup by mixing water, whole vanilla beans, cane sugar, brown sugar, blackstrap molasses, cinnamon, star anise, birch, and sassafras. They also make their own ice cream, which has no eggs for a less dense texture. A mix of Mexican vanilla and Madagascar vanilla goes into the ice cream. This makes a yummy root beer float!
