Can a percussion expert explain the differences between these two drums re the rope tensioners please, would that have produced a different sound?

No - the style is purely decorative. They function exactly the same way.

Mom likes me better! Yes - a bigger drum has a bigger, louder and deeper sound. I have a little 11" rope tension drum. It sounds like banging on a coffee can compared to a regulation drum.
