I honestly don't think the direction makes too much of a difference. Its not uniformly stamped on other guns I have that are similarly marked

Here's a mark on my Model 1842, two stampings of the "Q" mark, look to have been put on at the same time, slightly overlapping. The only difference is the quarter-turn rotation of the stamp between one and the other.
