96 R

Hello,

I own a civil war cavalry Sabre which was given to me by my father which he purchased in Philadelphia 20 years ago.

The only mark on the Sabre which is stamped on the peened tang is '96R'. I am thinking that would stand for '96th Regiment' possibly but I am not sure.

Could anyone shed any light on '96 R'?

Cheers.

Welcome From The Heart of Dixie. If you could post some photos as @captaindrew suggested we can take a look.

Here we go,

Any help would be great with '96 R' again that is the only mark on the Sabre.

I'm thinking it is an 1860 Light Cavalry Sabre. Could be wrong.

Cheers.

I think you are correct the scabbard is most likely not correct for the piece.

Many times these are what are considered rack numbers, where the sword is in a rack at an arsenal or even a fort/barracks for storage. Example from Dave Taylor's wonderful site, though of a cadet musket:

A rack number, I did not think of that.

Cheers mate.
