6th Florida Battalion, Olustee

I have 2 direct family members that were [CS Rcds] in the 6th Florida Battalion.

Hardy Bryant Polk - Co E [most likey a unit forming the 6th] transfered to Co H 6th FL Batt. Killed Feb 20 1864 Olustee. [Not mentioned in Olustee Battlefield files online]

Francis Redding Polk- [ son of Hardy B Polk]
Co C and E transferred to Co H 6th FL Batt. Went on to serve in 9th FL Infantry, surrendered at Appomattox.

Does anyone have more information regarding this unit and or the sub units that made up this element for the battle of Olustee, FL?

There was a paper posted on here about the 9th Florida and it's origins by @USS ALASKA a little while back you might find interesting. Use the search tool at the top of the page and you should find it or Google 9th Florida Infantry and you'll find it that way. If you can't let me know and I'll post a link when I can get to a computer.

Much Appreciated! The 9th FL is well documented.

What I am attempting to do is fill the gaps in the FL sub units Hardy and Francis were in prior to being combined into the 6th FL Batt for Olustee and why Hardy is not listed as a casualty at Olustee.

As you might know. There were more than several independent Co. That came together by order for the 6th FL Battalion . Most were mounted or semi mounted units that were tasked with supporting the interior of FL against Federal incursion.

It is a hard road to travel on research.

You may want to ask in the ancestry forum too. There's a few folks on here that are amazing at coming up with records. I'd imagine the records kept in those FL units at that time may not be great though. But maybe something might pop up.

I have found most of the records on Fold3. Etc regarding their individual records.

Searched the 7th records online and Fold3.

Hit a roadblock. So attempting to put it to the masses to see if there is any more information.

What part of Florida were the Polks from?Suwannee and Tampa. They moved from SC to South GA and from lands granted from service in the 2nd Seminole War with the 2nd Mounted US Volunteers secured land around the Suwannee River. Along with Platt who is also a prominent name.

They came from Maryland, to SC then GA then to FL via Land grants. Direct family Polk and Platt. Circa 1849-59.

Tampa and Suwannee River areas. Are the settling areas. There are various members of both families that served in FL units both Union and Confederate of FL.

I remember a small campaigner group that portrayed them at the 150th Olustee. I was unaware at that time of my connection.

Stewart's independent company was formed in February, 1863. By May 8, 1863 the company was shown among the Confederate units in the District of Florida under General Finegan.

In September, 1863 Richmond combined several of these companies together to form the 6th Florida Battalion.

Reynold's Company shortly added apparently.

Some of the history of the battalion, and of the component companies, and the 9th Florida given in Gary Loderhose's "Far, Far from Home"...

Yes, Hardy was with his son when he was killed at Olustee. Why it is not in the records of the Olustee Battlefield is unknown.

The link at Sixth Florida Infantry Battalion shows the various company commanders of the 6th. FL Infantry Battalion prior to Olustee.

The antecedent units of the majority of these mentioned company commanders shown below might provide some guidance as to the various sub-units that composed the battalion at Olustee.

Capt. John William Pearson (1808-1864)

He formed the 'Oklawaha Rangers', a militia company, in May, '62. (This unit formed part of the 6th. FL Infantry Battalion at Olustee).

Capt. Samuel Edward Hope (1833-1919)

He was m/i as Captain of the 'Brooksville Guards' on Mar. 15, '62. He resigned on Jun. 21, '62, to form his own company, 'Hopes Independent Co.'. (His unit apparently suffered the highest losses at Olustee).

Capt. James Felix Tucker (1840-1913)

He was commissioned an officer in Company K, 2nd FL Infantry, on Jul 8, '61 and m/o on May 11, '62. Promoted to 2nd Lt. in Co. D, 9th FL Infantry, on Oct 6, '62. Promoted to full Captain on Oct 14, '63.

Capt. Summerfield Massilon Glenn Gary (1826-1886)

He was elected as Captain for one year of a local company of Florida infantry at Ocala, in early '61. At some time fterwards he transferred to a cavalry unit and became aide-de-camp to his brother, B-G Martin Witherspoon Gary, until the end of the war.

Lt. James Washington Pearce (1826-1865)

He joined the 6th. FL Infantry Battalion during '63. (He's believed to have been on detached service at the time of Olustee and missed the battle).
