Ammo 30# Parrott Shell Clean and Preserve

I purchased this 30# Parrott shell recently. It came with a tag that showed at some point it had been sold by
Shiloh Relics in Savannah Tn and that it was excavated from Vicksburg. It was too rusty to bring in the
house and display so now that the weather has improved I was able to get out and work on it today. It
turned out pretty well I think.

Very Nice Parrott. You did a fantastic job, what did you coat it with?

I wired wheel brushed it, then sprayed it with rust converter, then wire wheel brushed most of that
off leaving some patina. Then a good coat of Renaissance wax. Then I thought I better blow the
loose junk out of the shell and while blowing the shell out the little tube on my compressor air gun fell into
the shell and would not fall out again. I got another air gun out and finished blowing the crud out of
the shell and then after many attempts I finally fished out the tube piece with a small telescoping
magnet.

Great Job. I always use the wax but I will boil the shell in the wax for an hour to draw out the moister and then it will seal as it dries after it come out.

You can get the 1lb blocks pretty cheap on amazon. Its reusable I just used an old big pot and left the wax in it and just reuse and add to as need.

I used to dry my shells in the oven until one day my wife looked in the oven to see what was for supper and that pretty much ended that plan.

Thats the exact reason I have 3 ex-wives, leaving my shells in the oven other than that I was perfect. I still dry them in the over on low heat after the come out of the electrolysis tank and then put them in the wax bath.
