The original stereo negative for this image is in the National Archives (NARA-529650). The photographer has identified the subject as Pvt. A. Cady Brown with an unidentified friend. However a check of the regimental roster shows that no one by that name served in the 22nd New York State Militia. Thomas R. and George W. Brown appear in Company B. Richard W. and Henry H. Brown are found in Company D. The only other Brown is David S. who is a Captain. The photographer's error means that we may never know the identities of these young men. This is the frustrating part of Civil War research.
Both soldiers appear to have a very distinct belt and buckle. Unless they have been cleaning and shining leather for a long time, the belts appear to have a layer of metal.
