I just got into northern Illinois after my vacation week between ren faires. Sadly, I'd had to skip Glorieta Pass this March.
My first stop after leaving Texas was Honey Springs Battlefield, Oklahoma. They've got a pretty good interpretive presentation that includes a multimedia film. I really liked the chance to look over a supply wagon in detail. (Images 1-5)
I went to Massard Prairie Battlefield Park that same day because it's so close to Honey Springs. My ancestor was 2LT R.R. McGuire of Company B, 6th Kansas Cavalry and was there. He was lucky enough to be able to mount up and escape the insurgents attack. I spent some time just imagining the camp. (Images 6-7)
It was too hot to sleep, so I set out early for Pea Ridge on day two. I usually like to hike these fields and look for things on the walking trails, but contented myself with driving my RV on the tour road. (Images 8-11)
Another hot night preceded day three's visit to Wilson's Creek. Again, I mostly drove the tour road. I don't take extreme heat anymore like I did when I was 25. I did get out to see the Rey farm and Bloody Hill, though. (Images 12-17)
And now I'm in Illinois getting ready for my next ren faire gig.
