2015 Reenactments

Thats what we are planning on doing. Local events. Maybe 1/2 doz or so. First one is Memorial day weekend, then fathers day next. We try to space em out no closer than 2 weeks. We have been invited to the Lincoln funeral but have to be Federal. No problem for me as I have a vRC uniform.

Are you doing it with a unit

I'm waiting to hear if two of the ones I've fallen in before are attending (they are based in Kentucky and Arkansas, so it's a bit east for them), and if so I'll go with them. Some of my friends from over here are going with another unit and I have an open invite so that's my fallback position.

Are any doing a stacking
of arms reenactment?

I received the information below as part of an update from the organizers of the Long Road Home Appomattox event (emphasis added):

NPS: Open Invitation Stacking of Arms Ceremony

When Sun, April 12, 2015, 3pm – 4pm

Description: For many Confederate infantrymen, their moment of surrender came when they laid down their weapons and flags at a ceremony lasting about 6 ½ hours on April 12th. As the Confederates marched into the village one division at a time, they were received by a division (4,000-5,000) of Union soldiers. This program is designed to allow both
re-enactors and the public to participate in this final 150th commemoration. Participants will be invited to line the Richmond-Lynchburg Stage Road as did the Union soldiers in 1865 or march into the village to stack arms as did the Confederates. Presented by Appomattox Court House National Historical Park.

The Long Road Home event is the one taking place in Appomattox near the industrial park.
(Apparently there was a rule passed somewhere a few years ago that there had to be at least 2 competing events for every major Sesquicentennial reenactment.)

I plan to be at Bentonville with the National Henry Rifle Company for the first time, the Long Road Home Appomattox event so I can take part in the Stacking of the Arms ceremony at the national park, and the Grand Review in Washington, D.C. in May.

Just received some updated info. on the "industrial park" characterization of the Long Road Home Appomattox site from a highly placed source in the reenacting community whose word I trust:

"It is indeed being held at an Industrial Park, but what was not explained was the Park has only 1 small industrial building close to the road, and literally hundreds of acres of rolling hills, woods, meadows and such, AND it is ALL VERY HISTORIC GROUND. It is only 2.7 miles due west from the NPS site."

Here are some pictures of the site--hardly what some people are characterizing as an "industrial park."

Just an FYI for reenactors considering attending this event--it's filling up fast! I received an update from the organizers that "there are more than 118 different units currently represented with folks coming from more than 29 states and 3 foreign countries; more than 32 cannons have registered so far." They are limited on space, and once that limit is reached, they can't accept anymore participants:

"I'd like to take this opportunity to say- if you plan to attend this event, I'd urge you to send in your registrations as quickly as possible! As I've said in the past, once our limit is reached, no further registrations will be accepted. You'll find this same message boldly stated on our website! Remember, contrary to rumors, this event is not by invitation only, but is open to everyone!! I will also add that the current volume of registrations coming in, has begun to create a slightly longer wait time in responding to the number of inquiries so I would ask that when sending mail, please allow a couple extra days for us to get back to you."

So, they make it pretty clear that if you wait until the last minute, you may not get in.

Fort Fisher. My ancestors were in Co. K, 36th NC (2d NC Artillery). Going as Union Infantry since I a don't have a unit there. One of the local units was nice enough to allow me to fall in with them.

Personally, I would like to go to the Lincoln Funeral and participate.....we just need to get enough guys in our unit who also want to go.
I'm really hoping to get to that one. I want to see the period recreated choo choo! Never seen an actual, live, true Civil War era reproduction train before, and it's my understanding that's what it'll be.

My wife and I will be portraying civilians, and we're considering riding Amtrak up from the next station down, Alton, just to avoid parking issues in Springfield but also for the fun of it, and staying the weekend of course before riding back.

Bentonville is a definite for me. I'll be serving in the Color Company of the 10th Iowa. We will be doing a 7 mile march in to battle and camping in original trenches Saturday night. Anyone that wants to join us should check out www.bentonvillemarch.com

I checked the website you mentioned for authenticity guidelines but couldn't find them. Am I just looking in the wrong place?

Well, what I attend depends on what equipment I manage to repair and/or upgrade. To move my approximately 2,000 pound wheeled forge, I will need to finish rewiring the trailer that I modified for moving it... and I need to use a hoist to pull the ~200 pound bellows out of the wheeled forge to make some repairs. .... etc.
