November 13,1861. Lincoln, W.Seward, and presidential secretary John Hay stopped by to see the general. McClellan was out, so the trio waited for his return. After an hour, McClellan came in and was told by a porter that the guests were waiting. McClellan headed for his room without a word, and only after Lincoln waited another half-hour was the group informed of McClellan's retirement to bed.
Reason: He had gone to the wedding of Colonel Frank Wheaton at the headquarters of General Don Carlos Buell.

Not changing my answer, but thought this was a pretty interesting twist.

Based on Hay's diary entry dated Nov 13, 1861, most sources agree that the incident happened on that date. But in his book Don Carlos Buell: Most Promising of All, Stephen D Engle claims that the incident actually occurred on the evening of November 12, 1861. The wedding that McClellan was attending was supposedly the wedding of Buell's (step) daughter, Emma Twiggs Mason, to (then) Colonel Frank Wheaton which Engle says took place on November 12th. Therefore, he places the date as Nov 12.

Emma's find a grave memorial says that the wedding took place on November 11, 1861 in St Louis, MO. Perhaps, if that is the wedding McClellan was attending, he had actually been travelling from St. Louis back to DC on November 12 & 13 and the incident in question really did occur on the evening of November 13th, as most sources claim? If that is the case, no wonder he was tired.

My responses are as follows: The date of this famous non-meeting was November 13, 1861. The two men who accompanied Lincoln were Secretary of State William Seward and Lincoln's Secretary, John Hay. What McClellan was doing that day to make him so tire was attending a wedding. David.

On Nov 13, 1861, Lincoln, William Seward, and his secretary John Hay waited for McClellan who supposedly had been at Col. Frank Wheaton's wedding at General Buell's house. The wedding part of the story has been disputed.
