How Do You Solve A Problem Like McClellan
(to the tune "How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria")

He made a snub, and that's the rub,
he didn't really care.
He walked the walk, but never talked,
his plans he never shared.

His arrogance impossible, yet he was "Lincoln's" man,
to march his troops to Richmond was at his command.

So he begins to whip his men,
to make his army work.
With his lead, he did succeed,
while on his face - a "smirk".

The army's looking ready to begin to start and fight.
when Lincoln thought to visit on a cold dark night.

If I could give a word of advice - -
when a President comes to visit - - Be Nice!!

How do you solve a problem like McClellan?
How do you deal with arrogance and pride?
How do you feel when you have come a'calling -
and the person you want to talk with - - - hides?

Many ideas of yours' you long to tell him,
plans for how the enemy to greet,
but Mac goes up to bed - to rest his weary head,
while Lincoln waits - he is fast asleep.

Oh, how do you solve a problem like McClellan?
Such great grief - for this - Commander-In-Chief!

  1. What was the date (month/day/year) of this famous non-meeting?
  2. 2 Men journeyed and waited with President Lincoln that evening - name them?
  3. What had General McClellan been doing that day making him so tired?

1) Date: November 13, 1861
2) Who was with Lincoln that evening: Secretary of State William Seward and Lincoln's secretary John Hay
3) What had made McClellan been doing to make him tired: he had attended the wedding of Col. Frank Wheaton, surgeon of the Second Rhode Island and Miss Emma Buell, daughter of Gen. Don Carlos Buell at the headquarters of General Buell

"Lincoln paid an unannounced visit to McClellan's home on the night of November 13, accompanied by Secretary of State William H. Seward and Lincoln's secretary, John Hay. McClellan's servant informed the men that the general had gone to the wedding of Colonel Frank Wheaton at the headquarters of General Don Carlos Buell. The servant invited the men to wait in the parlor, as McClellan was expected home soon."

  2. william henry seward and john milton hay
  3. he attented an officer's wedding
His famous snub of the President was a direct consequence of this attitude. On November 13, Lincoln, Seward and John Hay, paid an evening call on the general-in-chief and were told that he was attending an officer's wedding. They had been waiting in his parlor for an hour when McClellan returned, passed by the parlor door and went upstairs, ignoring his orderly's announcement that the President and Secretary of State were waiting to see him.
