Tell me more! 1st PA Light Artillery

Good afternoon,

Could anyone tell me or point me in the right direction as to where the specific batteries were formed.

I have enclosed a screenshot that lists the counties. But it does not say where the batteries actually came from.

I couldn't find any artillery units that were from Potter County in the 1st Light Artillery. I checked the independent batteries as well and still couldn't find anything.

Battery A: recruited in Chambersburg, Franklin County
Battery B: recruited in Lawrence County
Battery C: recruited in Philadelphia
Battery D: recruited in Philadelphia and Blair County
Battery E: recruited in Philadelphia and Blair County
Battery F: recruited in Philadelphia
Battery G: recruited in Philadelphia
Battery H: recruited in Philadelphia

I found about the same and looking at the 43rd info it appears that the last 4 batteries were put together with men from several different counties and sent to either Phille or DC and the batteries were formed there.

Companies G & H, 46th Infantry
Company G, 53rd Infantry
Part of the 149th Infantry
Part of the 210th Infantry

There were also Potter County men in a handful of New York regiments.

That is pretty much what I have found. Thanks

As far as the artillery, I'd assume a few guys were recruited and that is why Potter County is listed. That is what I can gather from research and looking at the records and such.

Appreciate it, the 53rd and 149th are my "home town teams" when it comes to the Civil War.

And although I have no lineal connection to them, I have a soft spot in me heart for those guys.

Maybe that is how I can justify my interest in the Eastern Theater and its major battles. Which my ancestors did not take part.

Pennsylvania's records can be very spotty in my experience. I could see that some Potter County guys may have gotten attached to one of these batteries but since they were recruited in a more populous location, that is where the records say the battery was from there. You might have to look at individual battery records and cross correlate with known Potter men.

My only direct descendant who fought in the war (a GGGG-Grandfather) was, I believe from Potter County. Fought with the 1st PA Cav for the duration of the war.
