I have this 63 Springfield musket with a tulip ramrod. The ramrod is threaded and as you can see it extends beyond the end of the barrel. I assume the ramrod is not original to the musket. Any ideas what musket this ramrod fits ? Also what length and style of ramrod is correct for the 1863. Many thanks.

Could you post a photo of the other end? It should be 39.5 check and make sure there is nothing at the other end keeping it from seating all the way.

Here is the other end. It does measure 39.5 in. Don't see anything obvious in the way. Maybe have to remove barrel band to get a better look.

Something is blocking it from seating properly

If I remove the barrel would I be able to get to where the ramrod thread would be ?
There are no female threads in there, if that is what you are asking. If like the Enfields, a leaf type spring in the stock holds the ramrod in place.

No. The ramrod channel is separate.

Seems the ramrod is held in by friction. Is that correct ?
If you could post some photos of the Springfield to include barrel bands, lockplate etc it would help as there was a type 1, a type 1 transnational and a type 2.

If you flip the rifle-musket over you can remove the trigger guard and trigger assembly. You should be able to see where the ramrod is coming to rest or if there is any debris that is preventing it from seating properly at the base of the ramrod channel.

I removed the 2 screws that hold the trigger assembly in place but could not get it to come out. Many years of not being removed I suppose.
